As one of the core subjects at our school, we give the teaching and learning of science the profile it deserves.

We believe science teaching should not only inform, but also nurture our pupils’ natural curiosity and allow them to ask questions, as well as develop the skills they need to answer those questions for themselves. Children have individual Science books and a working wall in the classroom to scaffold and support their learning.

Intent 

Curriculum design, coverage and appropriateness 

Our intent is for children to: 

  • Be challenged, through a safe and happy learning environment where possible taking the learning outside into the real world.
  • Be engaged and excited about science through real, relevant and purposeful learning that builds up their science capital: the sum of all the science-related knowledge, attitudes, experiences and resources that an individual builds up through their life.
  • Be inspired and develop a passion for learning while also building confidence to ask questions, take risks and extend their scientific knowledge.
  • Develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through the five types of enquiries:
  1. Comparative and fair testing
  2. Observing over time
  3. Identifying, classifying and grouping
  4. Research using secondary sources
  5. Pattern seeking
  • Reach for the stars by having the highest expectations of their learning while being confident to ask questions, take risks and extend their scientific knowledge.
  • Use a range of methods to communicate their scientific information and present it in a systematic, scientific manner. 
  • Develop a respect for the materials and equipment they handle with regard to their own, and other children’s safety. 
  • Understand the importance of science in today's world and prepare and inspire our children for further learning in science in secondary school and beyond.

  We implement our Science approach through: 

 

  • In EYFS, science is taught through a play-based curriculum that encourages children to explore the natural world and mathematical concepts through enhancing provision for children to explore scientific concepts such as melting, freezing, floating and sinking.
  • We promote children’s independence to choose ways to do things and promote their curiosity. In EYFS, we encourage outside visitors to come and speak to the children to promote opportunities for awe and wonder!
  • Science is taught in weekly lessons within the following groups:
    • KS1
    • LKS2
    • UKS2
  • We work on a rolling two year curriculum with to ensure that there is progression across KS1, LKS2 and UKS2.
  • While working scientifically skills are embedded into every lesson, we have mapped these objectives to the conceptual strands of the curriculum in order to ensure these core skills are revisited and built on.
  • Working walls reflect what is being taught, vocabulary, relevant diagrams, photos and knowledge organisers.
  • Books that are high quality and show a range of evidence. Teachers have the highest expectations and children are proud of their work!
  • A creative and innovative approach using a range of high quality resources and teaching methods.
  • Excellent nurture and relationships between teacher and children allow them to take risks in their learning, allowing all children opportunities to access Greater Depth learning 
  • The use of knowledge organisers to enable children to remember what they have been taught long term.
  • There are regular opportunities for children to learn outdoors, undertaking experiments and applying their skills as scientists.

The National Curriculum provides a structure and skill development for the Science curriculum being taught.

Impact 

Attainment and progress (including national tests and assessments) 

  • The impact of our Science approach is children have a deep knowledge of scientific theories and how this can impact in the wider world. Children can demonstrate their scientific knowledge and skills through written and practical resources. They are curious to find out how and why.
