About our school

Sport at Glaisdale

Glasidale Primary (12)

Our children love to keep active and we pride ourselves on offering a wide range of sporting activities.

We have specialist teaching in dance, gymnastics and cricket and our own skilled staff deliver lessons in archery, rugby, orienteering and much more. Children in all year groups attend swimming lessons, bsed at the leisure centre in Whitby.

Physical activity is embedded throughout our school day with children taking part in short bursts of physical activity at key transition points:

    • energising or relaxing activities in class
    • organised games at break and lunchtime
    • extra-curricular clubs
    • well-planned PE lessons

There are also regular opportunities for learning outside, which inevitably includes some physical activity, as detailed on our 'Moors School' page.

Children have opportunities to compete in sporting events organised by the local School Sports Partnership and Glaisdale pupils have developed resilience and achieved success in a number of competitions, including virtual events organised during the covid pandemic.

We have strong links with both Glaisdale Cricket Club and Whitby Rugby Club and are always looking towards further collaboration with local sports clubs.

    Impact:
    • 76% of our KS2 are active members of a sports club outside of school. Many of these children joined a club after being introduced to the sport at school (4 of our boys now regularly represent WRUFC).
    • Every child in KS2 has confidently competed in at least one inter-school competition. We were incredibly proud of our SEND orienteering team who last year achieved second place in the North Yorkshire inclusive orienteering competition.
    • The school has been awarded the School Games Bronze award

    Cycling at Glaisdale

    2022/23

Our new staff members have been trained to sustain this project and deliver the cycling curriculum in school. The children are now at a standard where they compete in inter and intra-school competitions!

    2021/22

Teachers undertook a training course developing the skills and knowledge needed so that they will be able to deliver a cycling curriculum to our pupils.

Watch out for our whole school cycling curriculum, which is due to start in Summer 2022.

    2020/21

    Pro-cycle sessions

Pupils at Glaisdale have had an amazing time developing their mountain biking skills, with support from Phil at Pro-Cycling and our fabulous staff team. Children in all year groups worked on cornering skills, leaning into bends, weaving through cones, riding over ramps and having a limbo competition, all whilst on a bike!

Pupils in Key Stage 2 also had the opportunity to take their skills to the local quarry area, where our more experienced riders were able to show off some rather impressive jumps and tricks!

    Team Glaisdale Cyclists

A team of pupils travelled to Catterick to compete against seven other schools in the North Yorkshire area in a range of events, including sprint races, team pursuits and endurance races.

The children demonstrated amazing levels of resilience and teamwork and brought home several medals, as well as showing amazing sportsmanship when a Glaisdale rider jumped off his bike to support a fallen rider from another school.
